This is a tribal/voo-doo style necklace I made for a halloween project at college out of REAL feathers and VERY REAL chicken bones.
You've no idea how long it took me to make this; considering that I had to go out finding a hell of a lot of pigeon and raven feathers out in the park, and save all the scraps from my KFC meals. That's right, all those bones I used came from what I ate at KFC. So before anyone says anything, NO I did NOT kill any chickens to get these bones. I just saved the bones from what I ate at KFC.
Of course I had to pick off all the meat off the bones before washing it. I soaked each bone seperately in soapy luke warm water with diluted disinfectant, then I got some tweezers and a small screw-driver and hollowed out all the bone by picking and poking out all the marrow inside until it was completely hallow (took approx 5-11 hours if you count the snack and tv breaks in between), rinsed out all the left over mallow under the tap, and then I scrubbed all the sides and rough sharp edges with sandpaper to get rid of the gritty texture and make every little bit of the bone as smooth as possible, and then finally I left them to soak in some prefumed oil for a long while so that they would have a nice flowerly and fruity scent when they dried.
I did the same with the feathers; I washed them in some hot water with soap and disinfectant, then scented them with perfumed oil to make them smell nice. Finally I woved them all together with elastic silvery string and bound the feathers in some nice decorative beads.
Boy you should've seen the look on my art teachers' faces when they saw what the necklace was made of.
The necklace is wearable because I tried it on, it will fit anyone and has elastic in the string to make it highly accessable over the head. And all the feathers and bones are clean and scented so there's no worries on that department.
And PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, vegetarians and vegans and PETA people; don't flam this deviation, if you don't like it then that's fine but just keep any bad remarks to yourselves.
Very cool! I love that you recycled stuff which would of otherwise gone to waste! Lol I'm vegetarian, but I have no "beef" with KFC since they switched to using CAK instead of throat slitting. BTW, what did you disinfect them with? If it was bleach... this will probably fall apart eventually. Always use peroxide to clean bones
Oh no bleach is dangerous for the skin so it wouldn't have been good to wear then! I just used detol and first-aid disinfectant. Then soaked them in perfumed oil a tiny bit of gloss-varnish to protect them from aging and get rid of the death-smell that some people complain about. ^_^
